Neighborhood Ministries is a faith-based community development organization that serves the poorest at-risk urban neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. The organization is unique in that market in the way it inclusively engages human and financial solutions to address urban concerns. It accomplishes this by combining traditional community development services with a metropolitan reach through church-based organizations, .
Neighborhood Ministries called on OneAccord in to help with a campaign that had stalled. We successfully assisted the organization in repositioning, restructuring and conducting a $3 million+ campaign to fund capital improvements, program enhancements and infrastructure investment. This increased their capacity for fundraising, particularly equipping the nonprofit to complete their final buildout of facilities and prepare for the transition of senior leadership.
Neighborhood Ministries had a stalled campaign they wanted to complete. They asked OneAccord to revise and manage a completion campaign over a two- to three-year timeline.
They had experienced success over 30+ years of raising contribution dollars. However, the organization hit an internal capacity issue with staff transitions and was squeezed by external economic conditions during the 2008 financial crisis. As a result, their major facility project was at risk of failure.
OneAccord was tasked with revising strategy, training staff and volunteers, and managing the completion of a new campaign of $3.5 million to complete the stalled project.
The situation required a complete review of structure, systems, staffing and organizational alignment if we were going to succeed.
Since OneAccord had completed two other engagements with Neighborhood Ministries, some of the groundwork had already been laid, so for this engagement, the primary process was updating our assessment information, analyzing the specific campaign plan that had stalled out and designing a new go-forward plan.
This involved working with board assignments, leadership alignment, building a new campaign steering committee and mapping out the timeline for stages of approach that could be measured and tracked accordingly.
We spent significant time training a fundraising staff member who had been prepared for a different position and had no campaign experience. OneAccord stepped in to act as campaign director while training her into the role and coaching continued until the campaign was wrapped up.
Neighborhood Ministries is now able to carry out their mission by empowering children and their families to engage with the education system and community in a way that will equip them to graduate, gain stable employment and break out of the cycle of poverty.
We helped Neighborhood Ministries reduce and complete their multi-million-dollar campaign, and develop functions and systems that are now in alignment. Board and staff active in campaign disciplines were equipped to be more effective in their roles while new, significant donor engagement processes, approach and culture have been established. The standards of excellence in the organization have been revisited and refreshed to stabilize and prepare the organization for future funding success.
