A Career in Sales

Posted by Brad Thomson on 03/03/2020

A career in sales 5

So, you’ve chosen a career — in sales?!

Or would it be more correct to say a career in sales has chosen you?

Think about it. When you were at school or college and someone asked people what they were studying to become, you’d get responses like lawyer, teacher, doctor, electrician, engineer, etc. Right? Did anyone ever say salesperson? It never happened in my experience. Nobody I know has ever heard of such a thing.

And yet, here we are. In sales. How did that happen?

Almost daily, I hear things like "Sales found me!" or “Sales chose me,” or “I kinda just fell into sales.”

Intrinsically there is nothing at all wrong with these responses, however one would probably not often hear someone say, “Medicine found me," or “I kinda fell into electrical engineering,” or "I never planned to be a teacher.”

The result? The vast majority of people, including many salespeople, don’t view sales as a profession or salespeople as professionals! Sales becomes an easy entry point into a company and so many folks will sell until another "firm" offer is on the table. I’ve heard it said on way more than one occasion that sales is great work until a proper job comes along.

I’d like to suggest that sales is in every way just as much a profession, and salespeople (if they want) can be just as professional as any other endeavor in the marketplace. In the same way that a person can learn to be a doctor, engineer or teacher, so a salesperson can learn and develop themselves to become a sales professional.

I say choose sales! Decide to become the best and dominate your industry or sector. Choose today to become a professional salesperson. Not only will you experience a personal boost, but so will your clients and employer.

In the same way that people in other professions become experts and pioneers in their field, so salespeople can become experts in their field and build a practice in which their clients are cared for, serviced and assisted, where the salespeople themselves are trusted, appreciated and viewed as experts.

Oh, and did I mention expert salespeople also earn what their expertise inspires? Expert salespeople always earn more than average ones.
